In today's fast-paced, hyper-competitive market, "solutions" have become the key competitive differentiator for enterprises. In every interaction with customers, our sales and presales teams go to great lengths to promise one thing: tailored solutions that address their unique needs and challenges. But when this promise is made so frequently, have we truly stopped to ask: Is solution (selling) solely the responsibility of sales and presales?
The answer is clearly no. In the modern enterprise, building an efficient, systematic solution framework is far from a solo act by the sales and presales teams. It is a strategic, company-wide undertaking that must be established at the organizational level. Moreover, transforming into a solution-centric company does not mean turning from a product company into a systems integrator.
As customers, what we truly care about is solving our own problems and achieving our own goals—not how great the supplier's products and services are. Even if those products and services can help us solve our problems, we don't necessarily want to own them. We want someone to help us solve our problems, no matter the method!
This is the sentiment of every buyer worldwide. As early as 1969, Harvard Business School professor Theodore Levitt summarized it in his book The Marketing Mode: Pathways to Corporate Growth: People don't want to buy a quarter-inch drill bit; they want a quarter-inch hole. This is a classic marketing principle known to everyone in the global marketing community. Indeed, most of the time, people spend money not to own a thing, but to achieve a result—to solve a problem and gain the corresponding value.
This problem-solving package is what we call a "solution." What exactly is a solution? It is a complete combination of steps, products, and services designed to address a specific problem or need.
In a solution-based model, customers and suppliers create a win-win scenario. For suppliers, solutions accelerate customer purchasing decisions, enhance competitive differentiation and win rates, boost customer satisfaction, increase user stickiness, and drive long-term recurring revenue. For customers, the solution model provides targeted approaches, accelerates effective problem resolution, maximizes return on investment, and helps identify high-quality partners.
Traditional thinking often treats solutions as just a step in the sales and presales process. In reality, a truly valuable solution should span the entire lifecycle—from product planning, R&D, and production to sales, delivery, and after-sales service—and even involve functions like finance and legal. It is not the output of a single stage or department, but the result of cross-functional collaboration and collective innovation.
Building a company-level solution framework means breaking down departmental silos and fostering close cross-functional cooperation. From market insight and needs analysis to product design, development, and implementation, and then to delivery, acceptance, and after-sales service, every step should incorporate solution thinking. This ensures our products and services precisely address customer pain points and meet their expectations.
The company-level solution framework is illustrated below:
From the customer's perspective, they may have pain points or needs. As the supplier, we design a "so-called" customized solution around those pain points and needs. In many cases, this solution is built by combining, integrating, and fine-tuning existing templates—such as industry- or domain-specific solution blueprints already developed by a department—to match the unique requirements and characteristics of the specific customer. Ultimately, our goal is to resolve the customer's pain points and needs, driving both individual and organizational success for the customer.
So how does this "customized" solution actually come together? Internally, there are customer-facing teams—including solution sales, solution consultants, solution delivery, integrator partners, and even customer success functions. Guided by solution-selling methodologies and processes, they work together to identify and shape customer pain points. From there, they develop a solution that covers both technical and commercial aspects. The delivery team or integrators then implement it, and the customer success team drives adoption to ensure the expected value is realized.
Behind these customer-facing teams are the company's strategic planning, product R&D, solution management, operations management, and performance metrics. Guided by a solution mindset and culture, these functions design and develop products and services while integrating upstream and downstream ecosystem partners. Under a solution-centric strategy:
Our products must be more open, easier to configure, invoke, and integrate, and capable of adapting to a wider range of customer problem scenarios.
Our services must be more flexible—not limited to installing and deploying our own products. They should enable greater customer configuration and secondary development on top of our products, and even support or complete the implementation, customization, and integration of other products and services.
Our ecosystem will be broader. We will jointly design, test, and validate comprehensive solutions for typical problems faced by target customers, go to market together, and build stable, coordinated technical and commercial partnerships.
At the heart of a company's solution framework is instilling a solution mindset across the entire organization. Solution thinking is not just a methodology; it's a way of thinking. It requires us to be customer-centric, deeply understand their needs and challenges, and create value through innovative products and services. This mindset not only improves sales efficiency and market competitiveness but also drives the company's sustained growth and innovation.
By building a solution framework, we can cultivate a talent pool equipped with solution thinking. Whether in sales, presales, R&D, or any other role, employees will learn to think from the customer's perspective and consider how to deliver better solutions. The widespread adoption and deepening of this mindset will give the company an unprecedented competitive edge.
